June 19 is a holiday known as Juneteenth for many throughout the United States. It celebrates the day African American slaves learned in Texas that the Civil War had ended in April and they were free! The joy they felt became a day of honor to celebrate the freedom of all people!
There are several titles for children to learn more about Juneteenth on Hoopla, including Juneteenth by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson and The Story Behind Juneteenth by Jack Reader. Also check out Show Way, a short film of the picture book by Jacqueline Woodson about the quilts stitched by her family mapping their journey to freedom.
